To say Tool’s Undertow single-handedly preserved metal’s spot in the mainstream isn’t totally accurate, but it’s an argument that’s certainly worth considering. Arriving at the hilt of the grunge era, the band’s 1993 debut filtered the trendiest sounds of the time through a funky, emotionally compelling and musically intelligent lens that carved out an entire new lane in the heavy rock zeitgeist. Today, songs like “Prison Sex” and “Sober” still slap a million times over, and every record shelf needs a copy of this thing.
