While known for their five-dollar shows, community activism, and resistance to mainstream outlets, Fugazi has so much more to offer. The band’s albums Red Medicine and Repeater are hailed as post-hardcore benchmarks. It also showcased the band’s effortlessly proficient musicianship and intelligent songwriting.

Formed in 1986, band members include bassist Joe Lally, drummer Brendan Canty, and vocalists/guitarists Guy Picciotto and Ian MacKaye. Before Fugazi was formed, band members were already fixtures in the D.C. punk scene. After expanding their material and honing their live act, the band released their debut album Seven Songs in 1988.

The EP also featured Suggestion, the band’s most popular song to date. The song stood out because it railed against objectification and was written from a woman’s point of view. Fugazi released another EP, Margin Walker, the following year. In 1990, the band released the band’s first proper album, Repeater.

Thanks to Repeater’s refined and toughened progression, the album is regarded as a classic. Steady Diet of Nothing, released in 1991, was considered one of their most challenging materials. In on the Killtaker, an abrasive set was released two years later. The album landed at number 153 on the Billboard 200.

In the latter half of the 1990s, the band’s tours and recordings became more sporadic. However, they were still able to release two exploratory recordings, End Hits (1998) and Red Medicine (1995). A video documentary, Instrument, was released in 1999. It contained interviews and live performances of the band.

Outside Fugazi, Picciotto and MacKaye helped other acts with production. The former also ventured into filmmaking. While the band didn’t disband officially, they remained dormant as the years went on. MacKaye, on the other hand, recorded and toured with his band with Amy Farina, the Evens.

In 2011, the Fugazi Live Series was launched. After reaching its goal of documenting Fugazi’s live work, the series ended with the release of First Demo. First Demo is a remastered issue of some of Fugazi’s unreleased demos from 1988. The ten-song album was released in 2014.
