As nu-metal’s first wave reached its saturation point at the dawn of the new millennium, Mudvayne offered a new way forward. On their 2000 debut, L.D. 50, the Illinois band churned out a mutated strain of hyper-technical nu-metal that had the fury of Slipknot, the eccentricity of System of a Down and the heady progginess of Tool. Everyone knows the riling br-br-deng anthem, “Dig,” but Mudvayne’s singular strokes really shine through on spazzy bangers like “Internal Primates Forever” and “Death Blooms.”
