Ghost’s major-label debut threw the Swedish ghoul gang’s love of goth, psych rock and Satanic Panic-era heavy metal into overdrive, with the sophomore set proving their initial appeal was no fluke. It also showed that their sound was hardly limited to doomy trad metal. An omen of free-wheeling and pop-tinged things to come, Papa Emeritus II and his Nameless Ghouls had us chanting along to the hookiest black mass of the early 2010s.
