A year before Black Sabbath and well over a decade before the satanic panic set in, Coven were fusing occult imagery with their own enchanting breed of psych-rock on their 1969 debut. While not as heavy as the dirgey blues-rock gods who’d follow, this American trio codified the dark aesthetics and spooky atmosphere of metal on Witchcraft — as well as its verbiage, with song titles like “Pact with Lucifer” and “Dignitaries of Hell.” It’s a project that deserves a spot on your record shelf.
