Soundgarden’s major label debut was the heaviest and indeed loudest that the Seattle band had sounded up to that point. Hungry, mean and hypnotic, 1989’s Louder Than Love finds the act firing on all cylinders with songs steeped in early grunge sludginess and a love for Zeppelin and Sabbath. Founding bassist Hiro Yamamoto left the group just before the album was released, and indeed just before Soundgarden became one of the biggest bands of the Nineties. A formative grunge classic with highlights including “Loud Love” and the satirically-stomping “Big Dumb Sex” (later covered by Guns ‘N Roses).
