After two LP’s worth of vintage stoner-doom with a charmingly well-worn feel, largely thanks to guitarist-vocalist J.D. Cronise’s earthy self-production, the Sword took their sound into the cosmos on Warp Riders. Their songwriting was significantly more polished, catchy and musically gripping, and hard-rockin’ highlights like “Tres Brujas” and “Night City” were given a much-needed sheen by way of Matt Bayles’(Mastodon, Soundgarden, Isis) production handiwork. It’s the band’s most effective mix of road-trippin’ bops and ambitious psych-metal adventures.
