King’s X weren’t originally from Texas, but after the power trio moved there in 1985, released their acclaimed Megaforce debut, Out of Silent Planet, in 1988 and earned a ringing endorsement from Pantera — “This was the sound that Dime and I were always looking for,” said bassist Rex Brown — they earned their Lone Star cred. Today, the uniquely celestial and smashing Silent Planet remains a wholly peculiar blend of proto-grunge crunch, gospel wails, power-metal majesty and mystic prog.
