Funnily enough, Death’s fourth album honed the group’s skillset to superhuman new levels. By 1991, guitarist-vocalist Chuck Schuldiner’s never-ending quest for innovation had already pushed Death away from their primordially-raging Eighties beginnings, but linking up with Cynic’s Paul Masvidal and Sean Reinert only intensified the sweaty progressiveness of the bandleader’s increasingly brainy strain of brutality. The jazz-mangled feel of fretless bass wiz Steve DiGiorgio was the secret sauce they slathered on this melodic, but mind-twisted tech-death classic. A testament to human achievement, now pressed on white, blue and gold splatter vinyl.
