Beasties Boys’ fourth full-length is a wildly self-referential, stock-taking account of the Brooklyn trio’s career to that point. The sprawling LP takes a culture-jamming approach where sample-driven, smart-alecky old-school hip-hop ricochets off a mix of soul-jazz instrumentals and hard-knuckled micro-freakouts nodding to their primordial hardcore-punk era. It likewise atomizes the Beasties’ frat days in favor of compassionate lyricism (“Sure Shot”) while taking the trio to new fuzzed-out heights via the immortal “Sabotage.”
