AFI’s metamorphosis from hardcore pranksters into horror-punk saviors on 1999’s Black Sails in the Sunset felt monumental. With the album, the band brought in guitarist Jade Puget to lock into their classic and ongoing lineup. Puget delivered some of AFI’s most daringly dark-gilded hooks, while vocalist Davey Havok’s increasingly Danzig-like yowl led a chorus of punk-rock pirates through a series of whoa-heavy anthems.
