While the Bad Brains’ second full-length may have been produced by the Cars’ Ric Ocasek, the power-pop magnate’s mainstream appeal didn’t dull the iconic hardcore outfit’s edge. At its punkest, Rock for Light redos of early classics like “Banned in D.C.” ramped up the speed and intensity of frontman H.R.’s already-manic-and-motor-mouthed yelping. But it also deepened the grooves of the band’s echo-caked, ultra-spliffed reggae. Fans continue to see the multi-faceted Light, with this re-press recasting the artwork as a nod to the iconic Blue Note jazz label.
