Shortly after the dissolution of stoner godhead Kyuss in the mid-Nineties, guitarist Josh Homme began touring with alt-rockers Screaming Trees. In his off-time, though, he started developing his own uniquely danceable, sensual and supremely smoked-out songbook through a series of Palm Desert, California-area jam sessions with friends. That’s the basis for the first Queens of the Stone Age album, a suave-smiling, distortion-saturated debut that balances cooly-strutting anthems (“Avon”) with tectonic plate-shuffling fuzz-metal (“Mexicola”). This 1998 self-titled album, now repressed as a double LP, marks the first of QOTSA’s many crowning achievements.
