Coheed and Cambria are a New York rock band formed in 2001. The band’s music incorporates elements of post-hardcore, heavy metal, and progressive rock with imaginative sounds, clever lyrics and tight hooks. The band is led by Claudio Sanchez, who also acted as vocalist, songwriter, chief conceptualist, guitarist, and author.
Their first four albums told the main story of The Amory Wars in chronological order: The Second Stage Turbine Blade (2002), In Keeping Secrets of the Silent Earth 3 (2003), Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV, Vol One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness (2005), and Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV, Vol Two: No World for Tomorrow (2007).
Since the release of The Second Stage Turbine, their 2002 debut album, all their recordings have been conceptual – all part of Sanchez’s science-fiction concept, the Amory Wars. After going on a world tour and releasing their non-conceptual album, The Color Before the Sun, the band returned to their Amory Wars storyline.
The first entry in the five-part saga was Vaxis I: The Unheavenly Creatures (2018). The second installment, Vaxis II: A Window of the Waking Mind (2022), was released after a four-year recording hiatus. Aside from Claudio Sanchez, other band members include Zach Cooper, Travis Stever, and Josh Eppard.
Vaxis I: The Unheavenly Creatures was prefaced by the two video singles, The Dark Sentencer and Prologue. In October of the same year, a deluxe edition of the album was released and it included a graphic novel and an act one novella that Sanchez co-wrote with Chondra Echert, his wife.
After festival gigs and a US and world tour, the band took a breather which was extended by the COVID-19 pandemic. Their 2022 release Vaxis II: A Window of the Waking Mind focuses on Coheed and Cambria’s run from tyrannical forces. The 13 songs on the album were co-produced by Zakk Cervini.
