For many, NOFX spent much of the Nineties as the poster boys for smart-assed skate punk. Released at the tail end of 1999, The Decline fully warped those perceptions as a prog-borne, politicized punk-world masterpiece. Sure, the epic, 18-minute arrangement rips speedy, octave-imbued melodic hardcore alongside Fat Mike’s famously sinewy sneer, but the narrative’s heady back-and-forth has him deep-diving through gun violence, daily struggles and the “Greediocracy” of American politics. Full of impassioned performances and a hell of a recurring trombone motif, The Decline perhaps presents NOFX at the peak of their powers. The 12-inch EP also features b-side “Clams Have Feelings Too.”
