Following 1992 breakthrough Images and Words, Awake found the Boston prog-fusionists leaning even further into their fancifully complex, sometimes balladic approach. Guitar icon John Petrucci also brought a 7-string into the studio for the first time, which added a darker and edgier style of riffing to “Caught in a Web” and lead single “Lie.” The transitional release was Dream Theater’s last with founding keyboardist Kevin Moore, whose lyrics to “6:00” reflect the personal and creative distancing between he and his soon-to-be former bandmates.
