Following the commercial failure of their now revered Paul’s Boutique, Beastie Boys built themselves a recording studio and started to jam — at least when they weren’t grinding G-Son Studio’s in-house skate ramp. While 1992’s Check Your Head still finds Ad-Rock, MCA and Mike D rocking the joint in an old school way — as boasted on the Bad Brains-and-Zeppelin-sampling “Pass the Mic” — their third album is likewise an experimental fever dream full of punky tributes to Sly Stone, sizzling instrumental soul-funk and more. A turning point that proved the Beasties were eclectic musical chameleons with a penchant for rhyming.
