Anthrax great Scott Ian got back into S.O.D. mode over the weekend while performing at the Milwaukee Metalfest. Alongside co-founding bassist Dan Lilker, Hatebreed vocalist Jamey Jasta and Ian’s 13-year-old son Revel on drums, they delivered the vintage crossover goods as “the world’s hardest tribute band”: Stormbreeders of Death.
The group’s Friday night (May 16th) appearance at Milwaukee, Wisconsin’s Eagles Ballroom indeed hit a ton of full-speed songs from Stormtroopers of Death’s landmark, satirically offensive 1985 debut album, Speak English or Die. In place of estranged S.O.D. vocalist Billy Milano, Jasta — Milwaukee Metal Fest’s current booker — held down the frontman duties.
They began with mosh-strumental “March of the S.O.D.,” and kept things speedy with “Sargent ‘D’ and the S.O.D.,” proto-blaster “Milk,” “Kill Yourself,” “Chromatic Death” and more.
At one point, Fugitive/Power Trip guitarist Blake Ibanez hopped on-stage to helop riff through “United Forces.” Someone decked out in a Freddy Krueger get up started creep-crawling across the stage for, you guessed it, “Freddy Krueger.” The night also featured Hatebreed, Agnostic Front and Cro-Mags covers, while the Stormbreeders also hit gag track “The Ballad of Jimi Hendrix” a few times.
The Stormbreeders’ debut performance apparently went off without a hitch, with Scott Ian reporting the next day on IG: “On behalf of the world’s hardest tribute band – THANK YOU! Our first ever show, we’ll never forget it! Huge love and thanks to my brother @jameyjasta for making this all happen. Stormbreeders! See ya again my friends.”
