Turnstile quite literally flipped out in the NPR offices for their Tiny Desk Concert, gifting fans jazzily reinterpreted tunes from the band’s recent NEVER ENOUGH and a barrel-rolling crowdsurf finale.
The five-song set bolstered the quintet’s lineup with the addition of saxophonist Tobias Moody, trumpeter Theljon Allen and pianist Troy Long. Up front, Turnstile and the guest musicians united for a funky and vibe heavy “DREAMING,” while Turnstile proper increased the heat for the punky “SUNSHOWER.”
A mid-set piano interlude bled into a heartfelt message to the crowd of fans and friends from Brendan Yates, on community and creativity. They then ushered in a soul-jazz minimalist take of “NEVER ENOUGH” that highlighted lush piano chord work and a brass-gliding trumpet solo
“This being somewhat of a hometown show for us, there’s a lot of very important people in the room: a lot of personal heroes, a lot of people that we grew up with, people that are family, people that are friends, people the we found music with, people that we made music with,” Yates said. “All that to say, thank you for always being there, and I love you.”
Turnstile and Co. then tore into the hardcore-paced “BIRDS,” and Yates front-flipped into the small crowd of observers, crowd-surfing his way through the back end of the tune.
