Pantera announced over the weekend that they’ll be rescheduling some of the dates on their “Heaviest Tour of the Summer” to take time off and mourn the passing of friend, mentor and metal icon Ozzy Osbourne, who passed away last week at the age of 76. That said, they also grieved in public while playing Black Sabbath’s eternally heavy “Electric Funeral” in New York.
The performance took place on Saturday (July 26th) at Pantera’s headlining show at Wantagh, New York’s Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater. While it was the tour debut, the foursome hit the doom-driven Paranoid number earlier in the summer at the Osbourne and Sabbath’s “Back to the Beginning” farewell show in Birmingham, UK — and Pantera famously also covered the cut for the Nativity in Black II compilation in 2000.
The tribute began with Pantera singer Philip Anselmo getting the crowd to chant “Ozzy!” then the rest of the current lineup — bassist Rex Brown, Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante and Osbourne’s longtime guitarist, Zakk Wylde — creeped into the funereal crusher. A montage of photos of Ozzy with Wylde and Pantera played on the big screens behind them.

While the “Heaviest Tour of the Summer” had been set to resume tonight (July 28th) at Saratoga Springs, New York’s Broadview Stage at SPAC, Pantera wrote on socials that they are putting the trip on pause for a few more days so the band and their crew can reflect on Osbourne’s passing.
“Ozzy wasn’t just a legend who shaped the very foundation of heavy metal and inspired Pantera from the beginning — he was family,” they wrote in a joint statement. “A mentor, a brother, and a constant presence in our lives both on and off the stage. The bond we shared with him ran far deeper than music.
“In light of this profound loss, we need time and space to grieve — to be with our families, our crew, and each other as we process and honor the life of someone who meant so much to us.”
The Saratoga Springs show is now being moved to September 9th, while a July 31st appearance in Holmdel, New Jersey, moves to September 8th. They are likewise canceling tomorrow night’s (July 29th) show in Gilford, New Hampshire, as well as September gigs in Birmingham, Alabama, and Virginia Beach, Virgina.
