Iconic Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan officially began his most recent solo North American tour in Boston, Massachusetts, last night (November 4th), and he kicked things off with a little help from his friends. Specifically, Wallflowers vocalist Jakob Dylan got up onstage to help perform McKagan’s recent revamp of David Bowie’s “Heroes.”
The performance at the Paradise Rock Club was cross-referential on multiple levels. While both McKagan and Dylan were paying tribute to one of Bowie’s most revered Seventies-period art-rock ballads, Dylan had also delivered his own take on the number all the way back in 1998, as part of the Godzilla soundtrack. The twist here is that both he and McKagan took turns belting out the verses.
The cover, you could say, is what kept them together, and you can see a fan-shot video of the performance (later published to McKagan’s YouTube page) up above.
As previously reported, McKagan’s solo trek continues through the month, and caps just a few days short of his new 7-inch release as part of Record Store Day (November 29th). The vinyl offering includes original songs “All Turning Loose” and “My Name is Bob,” which are duets with Fear’s Lee Ving and D.O.A.’s Joey “Shithead” Keithley, respectively.
