Primus are heading “Onward & Upward” this summer, with the long-running freak-funk trio’s latest incarantion having just confirmed a leg of headlining dates following their upcoming run of “Sessanta 2.0” shows with Puscifer and A Perfect Circle.
The band confirmed their road trip plans today (March 25th), noting that the 25-show, coast-to-coast tour kicks off July 5th at Paso Robles, California’s Vina Robles Amphiteatre. The trek cuts through the Midwest before hitting a handful of East Coast dates, and then boomerangs back West for a two-night finale at Channel 24 in Sacramento, California.
The “Onward & Upward” trip, which follows those spring Sessanta dates with Puscifer and APC, is notable for being Primus’ first headlining trip with new drummer John Hoffer sitting behind the drum kit.
The Lousiana-bred skinsman replaced longtime drummer Tim “Herb” Alexander, after the latter exited the lineup in late 2024, and secured his spot with the band following an “interstellar drum derby” that saw over 6100 applicants try to become Primus’ new percussionist. A press release dubs the Hoffer “the latest, and possibly the greatest, drummer to sit on the Primus drum throne.”
“Hitting the road this summer with Hoffer at the helm,” bassist Les Claypool wrote in a statement. “This fiery, cheerful, octopus-like drummer from Shreveport, Louisiana has breathed a very potent breath of freshness into this band we all call Primus.”
The upcoming “Onward & Upward” tour will likewise feature opening sets on select dates from prolific psych-garage veteran Ty Segall and avant-funk bass wiz MonoNeon.
