P.O.D. vocalist Sonny Sandoval is undertaking a sidequest through a new solo project called Sonny Dread, which he’s launched today (November 13th) with a pair of singles.
The longtime nu-metal vocalist issued “Sleeping Lion” and “Talk to GOD” to streamers earlier today, with the artist noting on Instagram that he’d spent “over a decade…wanting to release a solo project” before bringing the songs to the masses.
“Sleeping Lion,” which you can sample through the player above, delivers guitar-plinking reggae rhythms and cavernous dub effects, while Sonny Dread chants up on the mountaintops about keeping an eye on friends, enemies and the “wicked system” that’s got us all twisted.
“Talk to GOD” is a collaboration with rapper-producer Q-Unique, and it takes on more of a symphonic boom-bap approach. You can sample that one down below.
It’s added in a press release that a forthcoming album entitled Sonny Dread is on the wy, and that the collection “is a classic reggae album rooted in heavy bass, timeless riddim, and island-driven grooves.”
A due date has not been revealed just yet, but the album also features contributions from Ray Riley, Dondi, Arise Roots, Marcos Curiel, Louie Castle, and Gil, Migs & Rog.
