Megadeth may have issued their final album — and they hit number one on the Billboard charts while doing so — but Dave Mustaine still has plenty of stories to tell. For instance, an upcoming memoir from the iconic thrash master titled In My Darkest Hour will find him discussing his “harrowing experiences” with squamous cell carcinoma, and his journey through cancer treatment.
A press release confirms that the upcoming tome comes out September 8th via Da Capo, and the publishers explain that Mustaine’s first-person look at his 2019 cancer diagnosis presents the musician at “his most revealing, vulnerable, and true.”
“One of most harrowing experiences of my adult life has been my seven-year journey through cancer treatment and onward into remission,” Mustaine explained in a statement. “This story is considerably more than just go to the doctor, get diagnosed, get treatment and hopefully I live happily ever after. This was a journey of me saving myself, staying alive, keeping my family together, and continuing to make music through it all.”
Da Capo executive editor Ben Schafer added that Mustaine’s book, prepared alongside author Joe Layden, “speaks to the universal human experience of facing serious illness and how it changes a person, their family and friends, and one’s relationship with creativity.”
He adds: “Da Capo is proud to publish Dave Mustaine’s most unblinking memoir to date, one that isn’t only for Megadeth fans.”

As previously reported, Megadeth are on tour throughout 2026 promoting their recently-delivered self-titled swansong LP. The band hit Latin America and Europe throughout the spring and summer, before joining Iron Maiden’s North American tour (which also includes Anthrax).
