Mariachi El Bronx — the traditional mariachi band alter ego of long-running punk unit the Bronx — are back with their first album in 12 years. To celebrate the announcement of the act’s fourth full-length — tellingly-titled IV — they’ve issued a horn-heavy preview in the form of new single “Forgive or Forget.”
While the punked-up OG formation of the Bronx issued a self-titled album in 2021, IV marks the first formal project from the epically expanded Mariachi El Bronx line-up since 2014. A press release explains that the 12-song follow-up to Mariachi El Bronx (III) continues to honor traditional Hispanic music reflective of the group’s communal upbringing in Los Angeles.
Lyrically, the set is said to sport songs about “gamblers, former playboys, warriors, lovers – characters that became vessels for the specific pressures of being alive right now.” With first single “Forgive or Forget,” lead vocalist Matt Caughtran explains that it’s about someone “who’s completely disheveled and a little washed-out, looking back on their life in a way that’s kind of hazy.”
Sonically, the track fits galloping rhythms with fluttering acoustic guitar work, a soul-glowing brass ensemble and guest violin bowing from Ray Suen (Childish Gambino, Lorde). You can sample the reflective mariachi arrangement up above.
Mariachi El Bronx’s IV is out February 13 via ATO, and can pre-ordered on exclusive “golden ripple” vinyl at Revolver’s shop.
