It’s finally happening.
Following years of speculation, intrigue and self-critique, Slipknot’s reportedly Radiohead-esque lost album, Look Outside Your Window, is seeing release this Record Store Day.
The long-shelved release — an experimental set written and recorded during the sessions for 2008’s All Hope Is Gone —is confirmed to be coming out on 12-inch vinyl for this year’s Record Store Day, which takes place April 18th.
The album will not technically be branded as a Slipknot release, with a full listing for this year’s RSD offerings labeling the collection as a self-titled record from Look Outside Your Window. Promo materials confirm that the album features contributions from ‘Knot members Corey Taylor, Jim Root, Sid Wilson and Shawn “Clown” Crahan, and it’s described as “exploring new directions with no outside expectations.”
“We knew we were heading down a different creative path, entirely apart from Slipknot, and we followed it eagerly,” the group wrote in a statement (via Knotfest). “We called the project Look Outside Your Window as a tribute to this experimental spirit.
“Created during a chaotic time in our shared history, the songs were born late at night, in a house on a farm in the middle of nowhere. Peering out through a big picture window, we wondered about what, or who, might be lurking outside. That sense of the unknown seeped into the music itself.
“There were no rules; ideas could come from anywhere: subtle drum loops, bits of organ or abstract guitar noise, even samples of frogs or crickets. Guided by emotion and instinct, we let the sounds themselves point the way.”
Speaking with Revolver in 2024, Crahan explained that the record had been long-delayed because the band members didn’t want the release to interfere with any of Slipknot’s plans. That said, Clown called the collection, which had been teased over the years as having “Radiohead vibes,” as “really timeless.” He added that “you’ll never hear Corey Taylor sing like this on his solo albums…”
“It was a very emotional time, and all those emotions went into creating that album,” he’d said in 2024, “But it’s a beautiful thing, a serious thing, and I stand by saying that it will be worth the wait.”
