It’s finally time. King Diamond has announced his first solo dates in five years, which will find the mighty Danish metal royal hitting the road alongside thrashers Overkill, and joined onstage by a brand new collaborator: black metal experimentalist Myrkur.
A press release confirms that the King kicks off his North American “The Saint Lucifer’s Hospital 1920” tour October 15th at San Antonio, Texas’ Boeing Center, and will keep the code blues coming until early December.
Apparently the tour name is tied to a developing storyline King Diamond is crafting, and will reflect the horrors taking place at the fictional Saint Lucifer’s Hospital a hundred years ago, which the vocalist describes as “a dark period with lots of testing on human beings in order to progress medicine.”
“We have been busy putting this ever-growing horror story together, and it’s still growin,” he says. “I know the end of it, but how we will get there will be a long trip. There are so many characters, and so many unexpected things along this journey. It’s a crazy family on another timeline in 1920, where I experienced some hard times, and they have to come to our time to steal from us to survive. This is the most elaborate thing we have ever done, that goes for the stage production as well.
While there are apparently plenty of “horrific surprises” in store for audiences, up front the King has confirmed that fellow Dane Myrkur has entered his live lineup to both sing backup vocals and perform organ. The band likewise retains longtime shredder Andy LaRocque, Mercyful Fate guitarist Mike Wead, bassist Pontus Egberg and drummer Matt Thompson.
The tour likewise features opening sets from East Coast thrash vets Overkill, and Cali speedsters Night Demon. Ticket presales go live this Wednesday (July 31st), while general ticket sales are up by Friday (August 2nd). You’ll find the full details down below.
King Diamond last released the “Masquerade of Madness” single in 2019, though hopefully the oncoming tour sets the stage for a full-length follow-up in the near future.
