“It has long been obvious to me that comics and metal should be related,” Iron Maiden vocalist Bruce Dickinson told Revolver in 2024, speaking about his solo album and comic-book series The Mandrake Project. Today (March 27th), the project continues with the announcement The Mandrake Project: Year One graphic novel, which collects the first four issues in the series, along with the prologue (previously only available in the vinyl release of Dickinson’s “The Afterglow of Ragnarok” single).

“Finally we are at the end of the beginning,” Dickinson commented. “I honestly have to pinch myself to believe that Volume 1 of The Mandrake Project is upon us. I sometimes get the feeling that I am not fully in control of the story, and that some other entity is squeezing the blood out of my subconscious and turning it into ink on the page before my very eyes. We are just getting going. We are all… formed… of the dead.”
The Mandrake Project saga revolves around one Dr. Necropolis, a drug-taking, occult-obsessed, tattooed twenty-something scientist involved in the Mandrake Project, a clandestine project that involves harvesting souls from dying rich people and storing them until they can be reinserted into new healthy bodies.
