Poison the Well are giving us a day-in-the-life look at their heavy friendship via the new video for “Everything Hurts,” which is the second single from the Florida-formed metalcore veterans’ upcoming PEACE IN PLACE LP.
The video, which follows last month’s “Thoroughbreds,” is described in press materials as a “voyeuristic” short film. It starts with singer Jeff Moreira staring at himself in a venue’s bathroom mirror, then softly singing to himself as he wanders into the club to where his band are crunching out the darkly anthemic banger.
As the vid progresses, he cruises down the street to a barber shop to keep his beardline crisp, then starts rage-shouting his way on the boulevard, and finally links back up with his PTW bandmates to huddle up and pal around. Yet lyrically, Moreira shoulders the pain of relationships through raw, exposed emotionality, notably “staggering through the alleyways” as he assesses the friends he’s got around him.
“‘Everything Hurts’ is about the patience and effort it takes to keep relationships alive,” Moreira said in a statement. “I care deeply about the people in my life, but even the people you love can be frustrating sometimes. And it’s important to remember that we can be just as frustrating to them. We all have our moments — and I have my moments too. The ones that stick around are the ones you have a unique connection with. You can’t put up with everyone’s shit, so the people you keep close are the ones whose shit you actually want to deal with.”
In our recent digital cover story with PTW’s Moreira, we’d described “Everything Hurts” as a crusher where “Moreira’s weary, minors-driven vocal melodicism in the chorus explores the darkest recess of Nineties alt rock, while [Ryan] Primack’s weeping slide guitar — an aesthetic call back to his playing on 2007’s Versions — caps the track with Western cinematic sadness.”
