Masked DJ figure Marshmello and collaborator SVDDEN DEATH surprised European EDM crowds earlier this year by peppering a punishingly slam-centric, metal-and-dubstep-mutating cut called “Midnight” into one of their sets. Now, the next-level-weird collaborative cut between Oklahoma death-metal faction PeelingFlesh, SVDDEN DEATH and fellow EDM artists YVM3 and NIMDA is officially on streamers for all to enjoy.
While its somewhat unclear how everyone got together on the track to begin with, a press release explains that the song’s origins lay with PeelingFlesh guitarist Jason Parrish, who riffed up some sick-and-slimy guitar damage one day while nostalgically reflecting on Ice-T’s O.G. Original Gangster LP.
“The song came from me listening to Ice-T with my pops when I was like 9-10 in a ‘89 Trans Am with two 12”s in the hatch and always wanting to sample ‘Midnight’ by Ice T into something,” he summed up in a statement. “So I sampled it for the intro and wrote some riffs over it, essentially.”
While technically sporting some snippets from the O.G. “Midnight,” PeelingFlesh take it in a dark and digesting new direction through dank metal riffage and the occasional nug-crushin’ blast beat. As for the EDM contingent on this collab, the track accordingly takes some deep and electronic bass-squelching side-journeys.
