Rising nu-metal true believer Amira Elfeky is currently finding her niche by releasing a series of gauzy, heart-heavy and ultra-anthemic singles. Following last fall’s “Will You Love Me When I’m Dead,” she’s now hitting out with the similarly-minded “Death of Me.”
Elfeky had been teasing the song through social media the past few weeks, where she’d offered some behind-the-scenes footage of a video shoot and a handful of vocally-soaring but spiritually-crestfallen snippets of new music (“Loving you is suicide/Baby, you’re the death of me”).
Now that the song is out in full, you can hear how it merges elements of acoustic gloom and Nineties pop-rock drum production with Evanesence-like nu-rock. Throughout, Elfeky hints at a dire romantic scenario where she’s been dragged “through hell.”
The accompanying music video has yet to arrive, but the teaser clips suggest it’ll take on a Victorian gothic aesthetic that matches Elfeky’s high-drama lyricism.
