Back in September, man of a thousand voices and projects Mike Patton announced a most unexpected new collaborative offering: AVTT / PTTN, a joint album with long-running, Grammy-winning Americana explorers the Avett Brothers. Today (October 15th), the unlikely supergroup have unveiled the final advance single off the LP, “Heaven’s Breath.”
It’s a fuzzy rock & roll number that ups the heaviness compared to folky lead single “Eternal Love” — indeed, Seth Avett likens it to the Mr. Bungle classic “Retrovertigo.”
“Mike’s part of our DNA, like the fabric of our youth,” commented Scott Avett, who wrote “Heaven’s Breath.” “Literally, we studied him. He’s a dear friend now, but when we were younger, I was imitating him.”
Patton added: “My peculiar challenge in this was to become a long distant cousin. A brother that was orphaned. Maybe they kept him in the chicken coop or some shit. They brought him out years and years later.”
AVTT/PTTN is due out November 14th via Thirty Tigers in association with Ramseur Records and Ipecac Recordings. You can order it on limited-edition “sunspot” colored vinyl at Revolver’s shop.
