As promised, Lamb of God and Mastodon have opened the creative floodgates to deliver a full-blown collaborative project. Following a bit of online teasing, the heavy meeting of the minds arrives in the form of a new single titled “Floods of Triton.”
The song caps the two bands’ celebratory, joint “Ashes of Leviathan” summer tour. “Floods of Triton” was recorded at Mastodon’s West End Sound facility in Atlanta, Georgia, and perhaps being on home turf inspired the hosts to hit hard with an oceanic, on-the-beat sludginess that conjures the vibe of classic Leviathan opener “Blood and Thunder.” But then again, a new beast emerges out of this flood, in the form of Lamb of God vocalist Randy Blythe, who howls of raging typhoons and other disasters.
All told, the Lamb of ‘Don collaboration swirls together the percussive heft and eerie guitarmonies of Mastodon, while also including some Lamb-style blues-shred soloing along the way. And Mastodon vocalist-bassist Troy Sanders arguably drops a self-referential, and legacy-reverential nod to the long-running projects, too (“The old gods rise”).
