Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania deathcore destructionists Signs of the Swarm have offered up an illuminating preview of their forthcoming album, To Rid Myself of Truth. A heavy-hitting, heavy-themed song called “Clouded Retinas” is out now, and it features guest squeals from Lorna Shore vocalist Will Ramos.
A press release has Signs off the Swarm vocalist David Simonich nothing that the intense cut comes from a personal place, specifically that his lyrics deal with his struggle with vision loss after being diagnosed with Stargardt disease. (“Nothing you can see but decay / Nothing you can feel but the pain”)
“Clouded Retinas” crushes through compound deathcore beating, pinched-and-punished riffplay and a bestial back-and-forth between Simonich and Ramos. The interplay is presented as Simonich’s inner dialogue while managing Stargardt’s, and he hopes the track brings awareness to the disease. He also hopes it reflects his love of old school Acacia Strain and Fit for an Autopsy.
“I asked my friend Will Ramos to hop on the song not just to make it sound sick but also to spread awareness of degenerative diseases and disability,” he adds. “With Will holding it down for today’s deathcore, I tried to showcase my influences from Nate Johnson and Vincent Bennett because the song feels modern yet nostalgic at the same time.”

The band kick off a European tour tomorrow (June 4th) at Sölvesborg, Sweden’s Sweden Rock Festival. The trip likewise features a few shows alongside Lorna Shore.
Signs of the Swarm likewise have a North American headline trip booked for the fall, and it will feature support from Mental Cruelty, ten56., Carcosa, Face Yourself.
