The long-awaited documentary around space-rock figures Failure is finally seeing release. Now titled Every Time You Lose Your Mind — and featuring interviews with the band and fans/peers including TOOL‘s Maynard James Keenan, Paramore’s Hayley Williams, Nirvana producer and Garbage drummer Butch Vig and more — the film starts streaming through Hulu/Disney + on June 27th.
A press release confirms that the doc, which had been in production for nearly a decade, traces Failure’s arc — from forming in the late Eighties, to cutting a string of stellar albums in the Nineties, to a break-up caused “by drug addiction and record company inertia”, and up to the band’s current reunion period and cult fanbase.
“Our fans have connected with the themes of depression and addiction in our music,” guitarist-vocalist Ken Andrews said in a statement. “The film crystallizes those connections and, ultimately, communicates hope. We’re a band that faced a specific set of challenges and somehow managed to survive and thrive. It’s a story about resilience, finding ways to cope, and not giving up.”
“Most of the stuff around L.A. at that point was very kind of formulaic,” Keenan says in a new trailer of Failure, with whom TOOL toured with in the Nineties (various members of Failure have also participated in A Perfect Circle over the years). “Failure just seemed to cut right up through the middle. They were just their own unique presence.”
The film likewise features interviews with the likes of the late Steve Albini, onetime touring guitarist and current Queens of the Stone Age member Troy Van Leeuwen, actor David Dastmalchian, comedian Margaret Cho, actor Jason Schwartzman, Mötley Crüe’s Tommy Lee, YouTuber Rick Beato, members of Silversun Pickups and more.
While the film begins streaming on Hulu/Disney + on June 27th, Every Time You Lose Your Mind will likewise screen at Los Angeles, California’s Harmony Gold Theater the night before. Additionally, Failure will be there to perform a rare acoustic set.
