Today (August 20th) marks a full year since the passing of Brent Hinds, the iconic guitar hero and co-founder of Mastodon. West End Motel, another of Hinds’ longtime projects, are paying tribute to his memory by unveiling a new song called “Return of the Kid,” which happens to feature High on Fire’s Matt Pike on guitar.
The new song appeared on streamers earlier today, and West End Motel vocalist Tom Cheshire confirmed in a series of Instagram post that the heartfelt Americana rocker — featuring cathartic vocals and a blues-crushed lead from Pike — is indeed paying homage to his old bandmate.
“Celebrating all the music and laughs and memories,” Cheshire wrote in one post, which pictured a mural of Hinds, adding in a second post featuring artwork from Pike, “We hope you enjoy, and Long Live B Hinds.”

As previously reported, Hinds passed away last year during a late night accident when his motorcycle was struck by an oncoming car.
Mastodon saluted Hinds earlier this year with their “Your Ghost Again” single, from the upcoming album, Marrow Deep. That record arrives in full next Friday (August 28th). Two Revolver-exclusive vinyl variants and an exclusive picture-disc CD are up for pre-order now in Revolver shop.
Earlier this year, bluesman Marcus King put a collaborative cut with Hinds called “Red Door” onto streamers. CKY also recently premiered a single called “Beware of the Heartless” that featured an unreleased solo from Hinds.
