While we’re generally used to German electronicore faction Electric Callboy playing things for laughs, the group have taken themselves into a fantastically dramatic direction with the launching of their latest single, “Revery.”
The band themselves described their latest single in a press release as presenting “a darker, more serious side of our sound.” Accordingly, the tune isn’t as off-the-wall zany as, say, “Elevator Operator” or their “RATATATA” single with BABYMETAL. Instead, the Callboys conjure a mix of Eighties-anthemic power-metal, modern djenting and more, whilst singer Nico Sallach sings passionately of facing one’s fears.
That said, the eyeball-popping video is still an over-the-top experience. In it, a kid in an attic is sketching out pictures of fantastical landscapes on a pad of paper, near his pet tarantula — but he then mysteriously enters a craggy wonderworld.
As Electric Callboy crush the tune on the plains, the child — sporting somewhat of a spiky, Lihmahl-circa-The Neverending Story haircut — faces off against a mountain creature that’s part Steve Ditko’s slender Spider-Man and part Fantasia’s Charnabog. The pitch-shifted bridge has the shadow demon singing that it’s about to “steal all your dreams,” and that it feeds on “the light.”
