Coming off a recent round of reunion dates with mathematically jarring metallic hardcore legends Coalesce, vocalist Sean Ingram is now taking himself in a more melodic, yet still heavy direction by launching a new band: Idle Heirs.
A press release notes that Ingram and producer Josh Barber co-founded Idle Heirs over a shared “need to articulate previously unspoken feelings, illuminating the darkest recesses and inhabiting them wholeheartedly.” They’re apparently set to do just that via their forthcoming debut album, Life of Violence, which is out April 11th via Relapse Records.
The album is being previewed ahead of time through first single “Rare Bird,” which first takes flight with an atmospheric, yet anthemic post-metal sway. Ingram’s crooning is subtle and melodic up front, though he does increase the heat mid-song when the when the arrangement heads from bleak-but-beautiful chord-scaping towards the back-end’s percussive and metallic stomp-out.
The Kansas City, Missouri-based Idle Hands were conceived during Ingram’s time apart from Coalesce, who only just began playing shows again last fall, after more than a decade of inactivity. Barber wrote much of the album while “sequestered” out in the Pacific Northwest, with the record taking inspiration from the region’s “gloomy forests,” as well as the sound of post-metal acts including Cult of Luna.
Ingram and Barber later set off for Giske, Norway’s remote Ocean of Sound studio, where they tracked Life of Violence with a handful of collaborators. While the album is said to find Ingram using his familiar, Coalesce-style holler, it also has him honing his melodic sensibilities as a vocalist, which apparently “required considerable training.”
