Multi-national metal unit Calva Louise continue their world-building ways with the launch of a new searing single dubbed “W.T.F.,” which arrives alongside a dimensions-crossing, gothic sci-fi video.
The new track follows last year’s “La Corriente” and “Under the Skin” singles, and the latest standalone track smashes boundaries with a mix of banteringly heavy nu-rhythms, modern metal melodicism and neo-classical piano interludes. Vocalist-guitarist Jess Allanic also bounds between manic-paced and demonically pitch-shifted raps and a more classically-anthemic kind of songbirding.
The video, meanwhile, builds on Calva Louise’s ever-growing cinematic universe, this time heading from the band’s futuristic sci-fi leanings towards more of a horror-adjacent haunted house story. The vid finds a character named Louise confronting an interdimensional doppelganger, while the band themselves seem to get possessed by the end of the video.
“‘WTF’ is about that feeling of powerlessness that occurs when we are in situations beyond our control. Even being stoic or positive is not enough to withstand and face the challenges thrown at us, but at the same time, we don’t want to completely give up,” Allanic explained in a statement of the broader themes of “W.T.F.”
She continues: “The song deals with that limbo of falling apart while not wanting to succumb to nihilism. It’s an angry cry at whatever forces are listening, asking: ‘what the fuck am I meant to do?’”
