Every Callous Daoboys song, some could argue, is a work of art. And with the multi-hyphenate genre fusionists now just a month off from the release of their forthcoming I Don’t Want to See You in Heaven LP, they’ve delivered one more sneak peek from their self-described “museum of failure.” And it arrives with a very fitting title: “Distracted by the Mona Lisa.”
The latest Callous cut follows previous Heaven previews “Lemon,” “Two-Headed Trout” and “The Demon of Unreality Limping Like a Dog,” with some of those songs having taken on a more pop-rock-leaning sound. This time around — like the veritable Vitruvian force they are — they flex both that and the more metallic feel of their post-everything aesthetic, fitting the framework with a series of discombobulating, but melodically effects-blurred guitar ringouts.
As for vocalist Carson Pace, he codes the Da Vinci-nodding cut with lyrics he says allude to his time crafting art with the Daoboys. This includes referring to himself in-song as an “inefficient little fake rockstar”
“There have been countless times in my life where I have felt married to my passion. It’s been detrimental, painful, and has forced me to sacrifice a normal life,” Pace explained. “This song is me committing to being married to that passion, regardless of the consequences. It’s less a spit in the face of normality, and more a love letter to my own band.”

As previously reported, I Don’t Want to See You in Heaven follows 2023’s God Smiles Upon the Callous Daoboys EP, but marks their first full-length release since 2022’s Celebrity Therapist.
