Beartooth are plugging their forthcoming Pure Ecstasy album with another eye-opening and revelatory merging of pop and metalcore. Funnily enough, though, the song is called “Eyes Closed.”
The new track is the fourth preview from the band’s upcoming sixth album, and like some of the songs that preceded it, “Eyes Closed” finds vocalist Caleb Shomo singing of great change and personal evolution.
A press release adds that the song “captures the disorienting moment when life changes faster than you can process it,” while likewise concerning “fear, uncertainty, and the determination to keep moving forward even when the path ahead feels impossible to see.”
Aesthetically, the tune merges low-slung pop riffs and crushing breakdowns with Shomo’s earnest run of melodies and monstrous screams (“So close to Heaven / All I see is death”). As with the record’s title track, this one was co-written with producer Jordan Fish (Poppy).
“There are so many fun riffs to play on ‘Eyes Closed’ – it was incredible to scream it out and let go,” Shomo adds in a statement. “The song was written from the ground up with Jordan, and the moment it was a demo, we knew we had something special.”
A music video for “Eyes Closed” finds Shomo and the rest of the band pumping through the tune from various nooks of a semi-abandoned building. You can see for yourselves via the player up above.
“Eyes Closed” follows album previews “Free,” “Pure Ecstasy” and “Bullshit.” The next Beartooth album will be released in full on August 28th, via Fearless Records.
