Consider our minds blown: Avenged Sevenfold came out of nowhere today (July 24th) to deliver a four-song surprise EP called STATICA that brings the California metal vets into a boldly electronics-blaring and autotuned new direction.
Though we’d received a few outlier singles in recent months, from their Pussy Riot collab to their “Magic” cut for Call of Duty, the four-song STATICA is the first proper collection of songs from A7X since 2023’s Life Is but a Dream… album.
At first blush, what fans will likely notice is that the EP — from the title track opener to its closing “Ashes” — finds vocalist M. Shadows exploring a super effects-heavy, autotuned croon. The songs run reasonably experimental in light of their metal heritage, working through elements of neon-purple gloom, futuristic melodicism, and hypnotic and fearfully funky rock. Lo-fi electronics collide with robotic choirs and solos channeling a Santana-esque smoothness.

Notably, their STATICA arrives just ahead of A7X’s tour with pop-punk lifers Good Charlotte. The first date of their North American summer run is tomorrow (July 25th) at Ridgedale, Missouri’s Thunder Ridge Nature Arena.
