After having ripped out riffs with the rest of Avenged Sevenfold for the Call of Duty soundtrack a couple of weeks ago, guitarist Zacky Venegance is now off to the races with a brand-new solo tune, which he’s dubbed “Dark Horse.”
Notably, when Vengeance teased the song on Instagram a couple of weeks ago, he revealed that “Dark Horse” would be delivered under his real name: Zachary Baker. He also showed off a rustic pic of himself holding an acoustic guitar, as well as a deer-skull-employing logo.
Now, the tune is live, and it presents itself with more of a finger-picked, country/western feel than what the Deathbats may have expected from the jump — with maybe a touch of Garth Brooks’ “The Thunder Rolls” sitting in the mix, too. Baker drawls out scenic lines about windswept valleys, “guts and glory,” and what happens when the lights go out on a one-horse town. The track eventually soars into a pull-off heavy guitar lead, and then a quick harmony section of string bends.
