Amon Amarth may technically be land-locked at the moment, as they cross North America as part of Pantera’s current “Heaviest Tour of the Summer,” but that’s not stopping the viking-metal veterans from floating us a new tune: “We Rule the Waves.”
Earlier this week, the Norse-themed unit teased the track — their first piece of new music since 2022’s The Great Heathen Army — through a handful of Instagram posts and a supremely cinematic video trailer. Above the rumbling sound of percussion and chants about being a viking, the latter had a narrator promising that the band were bound for glory with their next single.
Hoist your drinking horns high, fellow warriors, for you can now experience the axe-sharpening, seas-conquering song via the fully fleshed-out music video — which was shot in Riga, Latvia, with Pavel Trebukhin of Tre Film.
As you’ll see up above, it finds the members of Amon Amarth taking leave of their Norse village with weapons in tow, ready to fight the good fight. Scored by a heavy waltz of iron-heavy melodies, tidal-wave-inducing double-kick and the growl of Johan Hegg, the Vikings hit the high seas in a fleet of battleships.
“‘We Rule The Waves’ is our tribute to the spirit of freedom, brotherhood, and the will to conquer — not just lands, but your own limitations,” the band add in a joint statement. “It’s about standing tall with your clan, facing the storm head-on, and carving your mark into the world like a Viking longship through blackened seas.”
While Amon Amarth didn’t drum up the tune during the first show of Pantera’s “Heaviest Tour of the Summer,” they may well give it a go tonight (July 17th) when the tour resumes at Detroit, Michigan’s Pine Knob Music Theater.
