Deafheaven fans can take a peek behind the blackgaze curtain through a new, intimate mini-documentary chronicling the cult act’s most recent fall tour. Dubbed The Vast Sterling Purple, the 12-minute featurette premiered last night (November 24th) through the Veeps streaming service.
Press materials explain that the featurette, made by Sean Stout and Liam Stewart, follows Deafheaven “as they journey through the quieter corners of America.” Throughout the mini-doc, the band reveal why they opted to hit U.S. college towns rather than the big cities on their September-October tour behind this year’s Lonely People With Power LP — which featured support from Harm’s Way and I Promised the World
“It’s more about connecting with people who don’t normally get to see the band and going out to them and giving them as good a show as you would in those other places,” vocalist George Clarke explains of the tour routing in the film. “Going to college towns and going to smaller suburbs, going to places where people do not go to as many shows, you never know what the reaction is going to be.”
The movie itself is less a direct concert film, and more of an artistic presentation of Deafheaven’s life on the road — with the black-and-white doc mixing scenic travel shots and light-hearted moments of them singing Sixties pop songs backstage with intense live footage.
