Revolver are celebrating Mastodon’s 25th anniversary with a new collector’s issue dedicated to the band. To help us salute the mighty Atlanta outfit, we reached out to a number of famous fans to get their picks for their favorite Mastodon song — including TOOL drummer Danny Carey.
They say that game recognizes game, so when it comes to locking down TOOL drummer Danny Carey’s favorite Mastodon song, you’d best believe the iconic alt-metal skinsman is saluting a cut that expertly showcases the equally epic tub-thumping of Brann Dailor.
Truth be told, there are myriad feverish Mastodon songs that find Dailor putting on an octopus-armed clinic. When push comes to shove, though, Carey points to Leviathan’s White Whale-themed “Blood and Thunder” — and the absolutely monstrous drum fill that kicks it off — as one of his fave tunes from the Atlantan sludge-prog greats.
“Great hook, intense power and fantastic drumming! ‘Blood and Thunder’ brings back great memories of our time touring together,” Carey says, alluding to the numerous times the two bands shared a bill. “I looked forward to hearing it every night we played.”
Carey can’t limit his choices to juse one, however. He also highlights Crack the Skye’s “Divinations,” a track he says features everything he loves about Mastodon: “A beautiful melody, a concise and effective arrangement, and one of the greatest guitar solos I’ve ever heard.”
Revolver’s Mastodon collector’s issue is available to order with three limited-edition covers, and can be bundled with vinyl variants of five Mastodon albums now featuring reimagined artwork by Paul Romano. More info on the variant options and more exclusive Mastodon merch are up in our shop.
