After nu-metal and alt-metal snuffed out thrash’s mainstream presence throughout the Nineties and early 2000s, bands like Trivium started bringing back fast riffs and acrobatic solos in the mid-aughts. Matt Heafy and Co.’s second record, 2005’s Ascendency, was a huge mile marker for that type of sound, merging the crushing breakdowns and big-room choruses of bands like Killswitch Engage with the thrashy rhythms and heroic guitarwork of, say, Ride the Lightning-era Metallica. It’s one of Trivium’s heaviest albums. You gotta own it.
