Though 1992’s Opiate marked a quick and curious first step for TOOL, even its broadest strokes gave listeners a sense of the greatness to come. The primordial alt-gloom oozing out of EP bruisers like “Sweat” or the sludge-funked “Hush” may hit a little more direct and heavy compared to even the following year’s monolithic Undertow, but it was clear TOOL had plenty packed their bag of tricks — including evocatively eerie vocal powerhouse Maynard James Keenan. A humble but hard-hitting set of studios tracks and live recordings from the future progressive visionaries.
