While much of the Sword’s recent material has shifted gears into more melodic hard-rock fare, their 2006 debut, Age of Winters, is one of the 21st century’s premier stoner-metal opuses. Songs like “Freya” and “Winter’s Wolves” feature monumental licks that singer/riff-crafter JD Cronise picked up from his studies in the school of Sabbath, but the record has a twinge of rip-roaring desert-rock flair that gives it its own unique vibe. This warm, fuzzy, hard-hitting album was made to be played on wax.
