Ixnay on the Hombre was a pivotal album for the Offspring. Following the explosive popularity of their 1994 breakthrough, Smash, the O.C. band branched out from fastball pitch punk and dipped their toes into wine-drunk psychedelia (“Me and My Old Lady”) and kooky funk-rock (“I Choose”), hitting a homer with the radio-dominating power-ballad, “Gone Away.” Songs like “Cool to Hate” and “All I Want” still provide their lovable pop-punk sneer, but Ixnay was anything but a Smash 2.0.
